Carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a mean and tricky character! He is a gas that you can't see or smell. He is also poisonous and breathing in lots and lots of carbon monoxide can kill us because our lungs confuse it with oxygen and put it into our blood by mistake. If this happens, we won't have enough oxygen in our blood to keep us alive.
Carbon monoxide gets into the air we breathe when we burn fuels, especially if there's not much oxygen around at the time - like in a car engine. This means that road vehicles are the main source of carbon monoxide pollution.
